Abigail’s Fresh Take on Classic Quilt Design!

We are delighted to showcase a stunning quilt that graced our studio: “Trellis Blooms” by Abigail Taunton! This beautiful piece is a testament to the power of color, negative space, and thoughtful quilting, and we think you’ll love it as much as we do. 🙂
At first glance, your eyes are immediately drawn to the vibrant, alternating rows of colorful blocks that create a captivating sense of movement across the quilt. The design cleverly incorporates a range of hues – rich teals, warm corals, cheerful chartreuse, and deep indigos – each segment perfectly complementing the next. Some blocks feature subtle patterned fabrics, adding an extra layer of visual interest and texture, while others are solid, allowing the colors to truly pop. The quilt is backed with our premium Turquoise Flowers 108” quilt backing.
What makes “Trellis Blooms” so unique is its clever use of white negative space, which not only highlights the colorful blocks but also creates the illusion of delicate, swirling floral motifs within the white areas. This unexpected design element adds a wonderful softness and organic feel, almost as if flowers are blooming between the structured rows.
I quilted it for her in a Flower & Leaf motif which creates a beautiful dance of contrasting textures. While the piecing is bold and geometric, the quilting stitches provide a lovely counterpoint with their flowing, petal-like designs in a delicate coral pink thread. This intricate detail not only secures the layers of the quilt “sandwich” but also enhances the “blooming” effect, adding depth and a touch of whimsical elegance to the overall design.
“Trellis Blooms” is a perfect example of how traditional quilt blocks can be re-imagined with a modern twist. It’s a quilt that would bring a burst of color and cheer to any room, whether draped over a sofa, gracing a bed, or hung as a stunning piece of textile art.
We hope this quilt inspires your next creative project!
